Gov. LePage: Speculation of Senate bid is 'fake news'

LePage vs King

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - Republican Maine Gov. Paul LePage says renewed speculation about him running for Senate is "fake news."

LePage used the term "fake news" repeatedly when asked by reporters Thursday in Lewiston about a newspaper report that Republican President Donald Trump is pressuring him to run against independent Sen. Angus King.

LePage reiterated that he's not running.

LePage previously said he wouldn't run but later said he'd reconsider if candidate Eric Brakey, a Republican state senator, failed to gain traction.

On Thursday, LePage told reporters, "I'm a doer" and that "they don't do anything in the Senate."

For his part, Brakey said he refuses to be distracted "by Washington gossip."
