Planned Parenthood PAC endorses Michaud for Governor

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Political Action Committee of Planned Parenthood is throwing their support behind Democratic Congressman Mike Michaud in the race for Maine's governor.

The PAC held a press conference Monday morning at their Portland headquarters to make the announcement.

Nicole Clegg, the Vice President of Planned Parenthood's public policy says this vote is an important one for Maine women, and Michaud has earned a 92% rating in Congress from Planned Parenthood.

According to the most recent poll from the firm Critical Insights, the race for governor is a statistical dead heat between Michaud and current governor Paul LePage: Michaud polling at 37%, LePage at 36%, and Independent Eliot Cutler at 18%.

Cutler's communications director released a statement about Planned Parenthood's decision which reads: "It is disappointing that Planned Parenthood chose to endorse a candidate with such a poor record on women's reproductive rights -- one who cast 28 years of anti-choice votes while taking thousands of dollars from right to life groups during his political career. We at the Cutler Campaign remain proud of Eliot's lifelong and continuing commitment to allowing all women -- regardless of zip code, occupation or level of affluence -- to make their own health care decisions and to have access to preventive health care, family planning and abortion services. We are confident that Maine women and men will compare the records of the candidates and support Eliot as the candidate whose record and positions on these and other fundamental issues always have been principled and continue to reflect his unwavering core values."
