WASHINGTON (NEWS CENTER) — Gov. Paul LePage is being pressed to consider a run for U.S. Senate by none other than President Trump himself.
According to a report from the Washington Post, Trump has told advisers he plans to not only call Gov. LePage and ask him to enter the 2018 race but to also offer his endorsement.
Independent Sen. Angus King is the incumbent.
LePage, currently in his second term as governor, has gone back-and-forth in deciding to enter the race. The governor's senior political adviser addressed rumors of a possible run in May by announcing LePage planned to "remain focused on the job at hand" and not pursue the office.
But two months later, LePage said in an interview on WGAN-AM he was feeling the pressure to run and that he would reconsider if the sole Republican candidate did not mount a more aggressive campaign against Sen. King.
