MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) -- Vermont state Sen. Hull Maynard says he plans to resign from his seat midterm to spend more time with his family.

The 75-year-old Rutland County Republican was first elected to the Senate in 1996 and is a member of the Finance and Transportation committees. He says he has four grandchildren that he wants to spend more time with, noting that he's never seen them ski because he's always too tired when he gets home to Shrewsbury on the weekends.

The Rutland Herald reports that Maynard's replacement will be chosen by Gov. James Douglas based on recommendations from the Rutland County Republican Party.
