(NEWS CENTER) -- Do you believe the President's support of gay marriage will help or hurt him in November?
Yesterday, President Obama announced that he supports gay marriage and equal rights for gay couples.
"Mainers United for Marriage" believe this will help their campaign to bring same-sex marriage to Maine.
David Farmer, the spokesman for Mainers United for Marriage, said he hopes Mainers' opinions of a gay marriage law have changed since 2009 and this backing from the President is just what gay marriage needs.
NBC News reported on Nightly News with Brian Williams last night that Obama planned on making this announcement some time before November, but his aids didn't intend for him to do it this week. It's likely that the timing of this is related to Vice President Biden declaring his support for same-sex marriage on Sunday on "Meet the Press".
There's a new poll out from Public Policy Polling. It was conducted this weekend, before President Obama made his announcement. 54% of the people they contacted said that same-sex marriage should be legal. 41% say it should not. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percent.
