Zhu Zhu Pets are hottest toys of the season

FORT WORTH, Tex. (NBC) -- The hottest toys of the season aren't expensive electronic devices they're little, battery operated, interactive hamsters.

They're called Zhu Zhu pets and they are quickly becoming the latest craze.

For a lot of kids this year the answer to that annual holiday question may be this it?s a Zhu Zhu pet.

More specifically, this is Mr. Squiggles the hamster that like to explore.

He's just one of five different Zhu Zhu pet characters that are in hot demand right now.

"they're a little hamster that I think it runs on batteries and it goes in a turntable. I'm not sure what is so special about them, but they're very hot," said Ann Stewart of Learning Express.

"I don't know either, but the kids love it. I haven't seen them, they're out, everywhere you go they're out of them," said one mother.

They're sold out of toys store locally and online and are being sold on internet auction sites for much, much more than their $8 retail price.

"what a lot of these people are probably doing selling them online for as much as 10 times what they cost in the store," said David Goldstein of Easysale.

At this learning express in Dallas, some customers call every day to see if Zhu Zhus have arrived.

"I know that the Zhu Zhu pets are on everybody's Christmas lists and I?m not sure what they're gonna do about it," said Stewart.
