PHELAN, Calif. (NBC) -- An endangered Golden Eagle that disappeared from a Southern California sanctuary last month is back home after turning up 50 miles away.

Xena, a 10-year-old Golden Eagle, escaped from the Wild Haven Ranch during heavy snowstorms last month when the roof of her enclosure caved in.

The eagle managed to fly all the way from Phelan to Apple Valley in the high desert.

Exotic animal expert Joel Almquist was called in when she landed in a family's yard and wouldn't leave.

He captured Xena and returned her to Wild Haven.

Xena first came to Wild Haven Ranch with a badly injured wing that never fully healed, and her keepers say she likely wouldn't survive in the wild.
