(NBC) -- A man Florida police have dubbed the "bird bandit" has been caught on tape stealing a $600 bird from a pet store and hiding it in his shorts. Altamonte Springs police recently released the video from the theft, which occurred nearly a month ago.

The video showed the man walking up to a bird cage in an Altamonte Springs Petco. He first checked to make sure the back door was open, then left and returned minutes later and walked right into the cage. He then leaves with the bird hidden in his shorts.

"Before walking in he has cargo shorts. You can see the pockets and they are empty. When he walks out there's a bulge in his cargo shorts pocket and management later determined a Conure was stolen from the parrot cage," Officer Robert Pelton of the Altamonte Springs Police Department said.

The video does not show a clear image of the man's cargo shorts as he leaves the bird cage but police said he took a Conure, a large, colorful parrot worth around $600. "No you don't hear of many bird thefts. All I can think of is the value of the bird and the resale of it," Pelton said.

If caught, the suspect could be charged with grand theft because of the value of the bird.
