AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Recipients of the Gold Star license plate are now learning what the number will be on their assigned plate.
Wednesday morning Secretary of State Charles Summers kicked off the lottery system for assigning those plate numbers.
Summers says the lottery system was the best way to keep the number distribution fair because it is likely multiple families would have wanted the same number for any variety of reasons.
Survivors of Maine military members who were killed in combat can apply for a Gold Star plate.
Chipco in Yarmouth donated the specially designed chips used in the lottery. Each chip has a number matching that of an available license plate number.
