One year since the shooting in Tucson, Arizona

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- One year ago today, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head in Tucson, Arizona.

Nineteen people in all were shot that day, six of whom died.  To honor all victims of gun violence, a candlelight vigil was held in Portland, Augusta, and Waterville as part of the "Too Many Victims Candlelight Vigil". 

Since the Tucson shooting, over 12,000 Americans have been murdered with guns, and 70,000 people have been shot and injured.  Judy Richardson's daughter was shot on this day two years ago.  She later died from complications.

"This is happening right here," Richardson said. "It could happen to anybody.  She suffered greatly.  She was only 25 years old, and it's unsolved.  This is an unsolved homicide in this city, two years now."

Since the Tucson shooting, Congresswoman Giffords has made tremendous strides in her recovery.  On Saturday, she revisited the site where the attack took place with her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly.
