ORONO - The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to Binghamton by the score of 57-56 on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gym. Maine falls to 7-11 overall and 2-3 in America East play while Binghamton improves to 3-16 and 1-5 in league play. Maine was led by its America East Player of the Game Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) who had 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
After Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) converted a layup to put the Black Bears up 56-54 with eight seconds left, Binghamton's Jimmy Gray made a three-pointer with two seconds left. A Jon Mesghna (Frankfurt, Germany) shot at the buzzer from behind half-court hit backboard and rim but bounced out.
Maine took a 32-21 halftime lead after finishing the last 9:48 on an 18-to-8 run and holding Binghamton to 7-for-26 shooting through the first 20 minutes.
Edwards had nine points and four rebounds in the first stanza while Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario) added nine points and three rebounds.
Maine held a 44-32 lead with 12:25 left, but the scrappy Bearcats responded with a 16-to-3 run, taking a 48-47 lead with just over five minutes left.
The teams exchanged baskets, but a Zarko Valjarevic (Belgrade, Serbia) three-pointer with 3:22 left put Maine up 52-50. However, Binghamton answered each Maine bucket before making the three at the end.
Allison finished with nine points and four rebounds while Valjarevic pitched in with nine points. Xavier Pollard (Bronx, N.Y.) gave out seven assists to go with six points and two steals.
Maine shot 35.6 percent from the field while Binghamton shot 42.6 percent. Binghamton grabbed 41 rebounds to Maine's 35.
Binghamton was led by Jordan Reed who had 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Maine continues play on Tuesday in the Alfond Arena at 7 p.m. against Vermont.
