Maine ties #4 UNH in regular season finale

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie with New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon  in Durham, N.H. Maine got a pair of goals from senior Joey Diamond (Long Beach, N.Y.) in the game, while Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) added a pair of assists.
 
Maine moves to 11-17-8 on the season and 7-12-8 in Hockey East play. The eight ties sets a school record for ties in a season. New Hampshire moves to 18-9-7 on the season, 13-8-6 in conference play.
 
UNH took a 1-0 lead at 15:59 of the first period when Scott Pavelski notched his fourth goal of the season from Maxim Gaudreault and Justin Agosta.
 
The Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0 at 14:06 of the second period when Gaudreault fired the rebound of a Jay Camper shot past Maine's Martin Ouellette (St.-Hippolyte, Quebec). Trevor van Riemsdyk also assisted on the goal.
 
Maine answered back as Joey Diamond (Long Beach, N.Y.) picked up a puck that Ryan Lomberg (Richmond HIll, Ontario)  had left for him. He held the puck a while before unleashing a shot. UNH goalie Casey DeSmith got a piece of the puck, but not enough to stop it from going into the net. Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) picked up an assist on the go. For DIamond, it was his team-leading 13th goal of the season. wever got the goal right back when Dalton Speelman tallied his ninth of the season from Grayson Downing and Austin Block just 32 seconds later.
 
Maine pulled to within one goal once again at 18:03 when Adam Shemansky (Robbinsville, N.J.) tipped a Klas Leidermark (Gavle, Sweden) shot past DeSmith. Leidermark had dug the puck from of the corner and skated out to the blueline, before taking the shot.  For Shemansky, it was his third goal of the season.
 
Maine tied the game at 5:58 of the third period when Hutton made a perfect pass to find Diamond alone in the offensive zone. Diamond's first shot was stopped by DeSmith, but he fired the rebound into the back of the goal for his 14th goal of the season.
 
Maine took the lead at 7:14 of the third period when Will Merchant (Eagan, Minn.) redirected a Brice O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) shot into the back of the goal. Steven Swavely (Reading, Pa.) also assisted on the goal.
 
UNH tied the game at 16:22 with a power play goal by Eric Knodel at 16:22.
 
Maine outshot New Hampshire 36-35 in the game. The Black Bears were scoreless in five chances on the power play, while New Hampshire finished 1-for-4.
 
Ouellette made 31 saves in goal for the Black Bears. He moves to 9-10-8 on the season. Casey DeSmith stopped 32 shots for New Hampshire.  He moves to 17-7-7.

The Black Bears earned the eighth seed for the Hockey East playoffs and will travel to regular season champs UMASS-Lowell for a best-of-three series starting Thursday
