LEE COUNTY, FL (NEWS CENTER) - The Red Sox made a couple of moves that have direct ties to the Portland Sea Dogs, one involving a former Sox star and one on his way to becoming one.

The organization optioned reliever turned starter then turned back to reliever Daniel Bard to Portland to start the season.  Bard has struggled siince the beginning of 2012 spring training with a 6.53 earned run average at all levels since.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox told outfielder Ryan Sweeney they will not be purchasing his contract.  The Sweeney decision more than likely opens the door for 2012 Sea Dog Jackie Bradley Jr. to make Boston's opening day roster.
