Wimbledon, England (Sports Network) - Former champions Roger Federer, Rafael
Nadal and Maria Sharapova will highlight the first day of play on Monday at
A total of 32 singles matches for both men and women are on the schedule.
Federer, the reigning men's champion, begins his quest for an eighth title on
the famed lawns of the All England Club with the first match on Centre Court
against Romania's Victor Hanescu. The Swiss superstar prepped for the year's
third Grand Slam by winning the grass tune-up at Halle last weekend.
Nadal, the 2008 and 2010 Wimbledon winner as well as a three-time runner-up,
will play on Court 1 against Belgium's Steve Darcis. Nadal is coming off his
eighth French Open title and last year was a surprise second-round loser at
Sharapova headlines play on the women's side of the draw against Frenchwoman
Kristina Mladenovic. The third seed and 2004 Wimbledon champ lost to Serena
Williams in the French Open finale two weeks ago.
Other top women scheduled for play Monday include 2011 champion Petra Kvitova
and second-seeded Victoria Azarenka. Kvitova, who beat Sharapova for the title
two years ago, is seeded eighth this year and will square off against American
Coco Vandeweghe, while Azarenka will take on Portugal's Maria Joao Koehler.
Men's action also features second-seeded crowd favorite Andy Murray and 2002
champion Lleyton Hewitt. Murray, who lost to Federer in last year's final and
followed by winning the Olympic title at Wimbledon a few weeks later, will
close the Centre Court session against Germany's Benjamin Becker. Hewitt has a
tough first-rounder on Court 1 against Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka.
