Scheepers into Budapest quarters

Budapest, Hungary (Sports Network) - Sixth seed Chanelle Scheepers was among Thursday's second-round winners at the $235,000 Hungarian Grand Prix tennis event.

The South African got past Croat Petra Martic 7-5, 6-4 on the red clay at Romai Tennis Academy.

A Day-4 upset occurred when Israeli veteran Shahar Peer topped eighth-seeded Georgian Anna Tatishvili, 6-1, 6-1.

Also, Romanian Alexandra Cadantu overcame Czech Andrea Hlavackova 4-6, 7-5, 4-0, retired, and Montenegro's Danka Kovinic reached her first quarterfinal in her first-ever WTA event by holding off fellow newcomer Valeria Solovyeva of Russia 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

Friday's quarterfinals will pit hot third-seeded Romanian Simona Halep against Hungary's own Timea Babos, fourth-seeded German Annika Beck versus Austrian Yvonne Meusburger, Scheepers against Kovinic, and Peer versus Cadantu.

The 21-year-old Halep has won 13 of her last 14 matches on the WTA, including her first-ever titles in Nuremberg, Germany, and Den Bosch, Netherlands, in back-to-back weeks last month.

The 2013 Hungarian Grand Prix champion will earn $40,000.
