East Lothian, Scotland (Sports Network) - Three-time champion Tiger Woods carded a 2-under 69 on Thursday to end his first round three strokes off the lead at the British Open Championship.

Woods, who overcame a poor tee shot at the first, mixed five birdies and three bogeys in his round.

The 14-time major champion pulled his drive into the thick left rough off the first tee. He took an unplayable lie penalty and scrambled to a bogey. He narrowly missed a birdie at two, but did birdie the fourth to get back to even-par for his round.

Woods stumbled to another bogey at the sixth. After three straight pars, he converted back-to-back birdie chances at 10 and 11. Woods moved to 2-under with a birdie at the 13th.

However, he 3-putted for bogey on the 14th to drop a shot. Woods 2-putted for birdie on the par-5 17th and parred the last for one of the best rounds of the afternoon.

"Some of these pin locations with the greens drying out the way they were, they were really tough to get the ball close," said Woods in a televised interview. "It was frightening how fast the greens got. With it drying out, I can see that it was fine in the morning, but by the time we got through there in the afternoon, it just continued to dry out."
