Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Samford's All-Southern Conference
preseason players carried the Bulldogs last week in their team's season-opening
31-21 victory against FBS opponent Georgia State.
The Bulldogs were led by running back Fabian Truss, who opened the game with a
100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and rushed for 78 yards and one
touchdown. Defensive back Jaquiski Tartt got involved in the team's scoring
in the third quarter, picking off Panthers quarterback Ronnie Bell and scoring
on a 33-yard return.
The Bulldogs will need all that firepower and more when they take on the
Arkansas Razorbacks Saturday in Fayetteville.
Arkansas handedly defeated the Sun Belt Conference's Louisiana-Lafayette,
34-14, behind standout performances from its skills position players and a
strong defensive effort that resulted in two ULL turnovers and just 274 total
Samford's best bet is to force turnovers, although Razorbacks starting
quarterback Brandon Allen didn't throw an interception in 22 pass attempts.
But Tartt is a skilled defensive player, and considering last weekend's madness
with FCS upsets of FBS teams, it's not totally out of the question to think
Samford has some semblance of a chance.
The Bulldogs will be fighting hard for a win as its SoCon adversaries Wofford
and The Citadel go head-to-head on Saturday.
