BOSTON -- The White House has made it official: President Obama won't be attending Wednesday's World Series game in Boston.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest noted that Obama roots for the Chicago White Sox -- rivals of the Boston Red Sox -- but he understands "the passion" of Boston fans as they seek their third World Series title within the past decade.

The Red Sox -- who lead the St. Louis Cardinals three games to two in the best-of-seven series -- have not clinched a World Series at home in Fenway Park since 1918, back when Babe Ruth was one of their stars.

Obama, who is in Boston for a health care speech and a fundraiser, is scheduled to leave the city more than an hour before the opening pitch.

Earnest said he does expect Obama to catch the game on television.
