(NEWS CENTER) - Cheverus, Kennebunk, Winslow, Oak Hill, and Bucksport all defended their home fields to earn the final five spots for the football state championship finals.
Top-ranked Cheverus trailed #2 Porltand 19-7 at the half only to shuotout the Bulldogs not only the score board, but from getting a single first down in the second half in a 22-19 comeback win for the Class 'A' East title. It's the Stags third state final berth in the past four seasons.
In 'B' West, #1 Kennebunk rolled past #3 Marshwood 41-14. The Rams led the Hawks 26-0 at halftime. It's their third state final in program history and first since 1999.
In Eastern Maine Class 'C', number one seed Winslow avenged a regular season loss to #2 Waterville by pounding the Purple Panthers 49-18. It's the Black Raiders second consecutive state finals appearance.
The only class not to play on Friday had one close contest and a one-sided affair. In Western Maine, #2 Oak Hill advanced to their first state final since 1984 by holding off #4 Dirigo 16-14. Over in 'D' East, unbeaten and #1 Bucksport handled #3 Matttanawcook Academy 42-8.
