Freestyle skier Simon Dumont
COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colorado (NEWS CENTER) - Bethel native Simon Dumont missed out on another opportunity on Friday in his bid to qualify for the US Olympic ski team after placing fifth in the freestyle halfpipe at a World Cup event.
The top five comes is a signifcant improvement from a week ago when the four-time X Games gold medalist didn't even place at the first of five Olympic qualifiers due to a concussion he suffered after hitting his head on the halfpipe during a practice run.
Dumont, who now lives in Utah, has three more events left to earn a requried pair of top three overall finishes to earn a spot on the 2014 Sochi Olympic team, which will be the debut of freetyle skiing halfpipe in the Winter Games.
17-year Aaron Blunck, who won the Copper Mountain event, is the only American with a top three finish in each of the first two events.
