Freshmen lead Black Bears to exhibition win

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Freshman Laia Sole led the University of Maine women's basketball team to a 74-54 victory over Stonehill in exhibition action on Sunday afternoon. Sole dropped a team-high 21 points on 10-for-13 shooting while fellow freshman Fanny Wadling chipped in 11 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Tanesha Sutton, playing in her first game with the Black Bears since transferring from Duquesne, added 10 points. Preseason all-conference guard Sigi Koizar netted eight points with a game-high seven rebounds and four assists.

The Black Bears controlled the boards, snatching 43 rebounds to Stonehill's 28 while forcing 20 Skyhawks turnovers. The rebounding led to a 16-4 advantage by Maine on second chance points. The Black Bears also held a large advantage inside, outscoring the Skyhawks 44-26 in the paint.

Maine was able to pull away in the second half, outscoring Stonehill 41-24 over the final two quarters as it shot 53.1-percent over the final 20-minutes.

The Black Bears faced their largest deficit with 5:12 remaining in the first half, trailing 26-17. A jumper from Sutton and a 3-pointer from Blanca Millan off a steal by Fanny Wadling jump started a 7-0 run which brought Maine back within two.

Maine kept charging, outscoring Stonehill 16-4 over the final five minutes off the half, as a trey from Koizar with 3-seconds left in the second quarter gave Maine a 33-30 edge at the break.

Stonehill cut the lead to just one early in the third quarter before Maine responded. A triple from Naira Caceres started a 10-0 Maine run, giving the Black Bears their first double-digit lead of the game.

The Skyhawks continued to chip away but could not get any closer than four.

Maine, leading by 11 with 3:19 to play, did not let the Skyhawks score again. The Black Bears ended the game with a 9-0 run to secure the 74-54 exhibition win.

The Black Bears open the regular season on Nov. 11 when they host Purdue in the opening round of the Tipoff Tournament at the Cross Insurance Center. On Nov. 12, Maine will play either Mississippi St. or Villanova at 7 p.m.
