Husson softball wins 6th straight NAC tourney title

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The Husson softball team won three elimination games on Sunday to capture their sixth consecutive North Atlantic Conference League title.

Down to their last out and trailing 4-2, the Eagles scored five runs in the top of the seventh en route to 7-4 final for the title clincher. Telstar alum Lyndsay Merrill kept the season alive with an RBI single. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Casey Lopes gave the Eagles the lead with a two-run single, then Haley Spiers added some insurance as she capped a five-run inning with a two-run double.

Husson forced the winner-take-all final with with a 3-1 win thanks to a two-run walk off home run by Nicole Andrade in the bottom of the seventh. Castleton State was double-elimination tournament's lone unbeaten entering Sunday after their 5-1 defeat of the Eagles the day before. Top-seeded Husson trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the 6th when when another Merrill on the roster Kayla led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple.

The first of the elimination game of the day for Husson was a 7-1 victory over Lyndon State.

Husson will find out where they'll be placed in the NCAA tournament on Monday morning with the Division III softball selection show scheduled for 10 a.m.
