UMaine baseball clinches spot in America East tournament

ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The UMaine baseball team locked up the last spot in the America East baseball tournament with a 7-0 shutout of Albany at Mahaney Diamond on Sunday.

Maine, who is the fourth and final team to clinch a place in the double-elimination tournament scheduled to take place May 22-25 at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Massachusetts, assured the postseason berth by stretching their lead to 3.5 games over fifth--placed Maryland-Baltimore County with only three games to play, The Black Bears and Retrievers will close their regular seasons with a three-game series scheduled to take place in Orono next weekend.

Junior pitcher Scott Heath (Westbrook H.S.) and senior hurler Shawn Coughlin combined for a four-hit shutout. Heath pitched the first four innings with Coughlin relieving for the final five and getting the win to improve to 4-5 on the year.

Senior outfielder Colin Gay went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI.

Maine, now 21-26 overall and 8-10 in league play, will host Boston College at Goodall Park in Sanford on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
