UMaine baseball settles for split with Albany

ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The UMaine baseball team started the day strong by beating America East rivals Albany, but the visitors bounced back to split the day-night double-header.

The Black Bears took the opener 9-4 and fell in the nightcap 6-4.

Reigning America East pitcher of the year Tommy Lawrence improved to 7-4 with a complete game effort in game one : four runs allowed on eight hits with four strikeouts.

First baseman Scott Heath provided the offense for the Black Bears going 2-for-4 with 4 runs driven and one scored. Second baseman Alex Calbick and third baseman Jonathan Salcedo had mutli-hit games as well with each scoring a run and driving in two more.

Freshman pitcher and Thornton Academy alum Jeff Gelinas took the loss in the second game (3-4) after allowing six runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings.

Maine (20-26 overall, 7-10 in America East play) concludes their three-game series with Albany on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
