CASCO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) Maine's wild turkey population is thriving despite threats from a difficult winter and disease.

"Turkeys have a wonderful ability to survive," says Rob Cotiaux, who is a veteran guide and long time leader of the Maine Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

"When they first came to Maine, we didn't know if they could survive here or not," said Cotiaux.

Howell Copp, who owns Howell's Gun Shop in Gray concurs. His shop is tagging station where successful hunters bring their birds. "They may have had a hard winter, but there are plenty of turkeys in Maine," says Copp. "In fact, in some places there are too many birds."

Maine's hunting season for wild turkey continues until May 31st.
