Boston, MA (NEWS CENTER)-- We've all seen the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest from Coney Island. Although 99 years old, it was a couple of former Bangor boys who made it into the international sensation that it is.
George and Richard Shea who went into the public relations business in New York City began promoting the contest almost twenty years ago. They have grown it into an internationally televised event with solid ratings. They have also created Major League Eating which runs similar events all over the world.
Richard Shea smiles as he thinks what the events have become. He points out that eating is a sport and "we never play with the narrative. What happens on stage happens on stage."
The Sheas moved to Bangor with their banker father. George graduated from Bangor High and Richard left after his Junior year. The family lived on Grove Street and both brothers were swimmers.
