AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The delay in getting accurate budget numbers for the Department of Health and Human Services means the Legislature will have to wait until sometime in May to finish all of its budget work for the year.

The Appropriations Committee did reach another budget milestone last night - voting unanimously for the latest package of budget changes proposed by Governor Paul LePage. The supplemental budget, as its called, originally included income tax cuts for people on retirement pensions, major cuts to general assistance welfare programs and cuts to the University and community colleges. The package passed last night dropped the income tax cuts and higher ed cuts, and changed the general assistance plan. It also restored funding to the Maine Public Broadcasting network.
