BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- With school out for the summer, a lot of kids are grabbing their skateboards and heading outside. Just like with any other sport, having the proper protection while skateboarding is important.
Robert Wheat of Cadillac Mountain Sports said at the very least people need to wear a helmet. He recommends getting a certified helmet to properly protect their head. The helmet should have a snug fit and lots of padding on the inside.
Wheat said if someone takes a major hit to the head, they should throw away their helmet and get another one.
"It could potentially not protect them as it should. We definitely stress to kids that these are one time helmets, you know one time hit helmets," Wheat said.
Wheat also recommends that people wear knee pads with a hard shell to protect their knees.
