ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- On Wednesday night the Asphalt Orchestra will play a concert at the UMaine Collins Center. To help drum up interest the orchestra had a little surprise for people on campus.

The orchestra performed a flash mob concert on campus Wednesday. It started in the Hilltop dining commons at noon and they performed at a few other places on campus.

Co-Director of the Asphalt Orchestra Ken Thomson said the group is a 12 piece marching band and they play a wide variety of music ranging from rock, to jazz, to classical. Thomson said he has noticed that performing flash mob concerts before the main event helps bring in a few more people to the show.

"We've discovered that doing the flash mob thing it actually works that people show up for the concert latter so even if they don't know about the band or they don't know what's going on here on campus tonight that they actually find out about it and they say 'hey, let's go down to the show,'" Thomson said.

The Asphalt Orchestra will only have one performance at the Collins Center. The concert starts Wednesday night at 7.
