The USM School of Music celebrates the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra's 70th anniversary with a performance of Gustav Mahler's 3rd Symphony in Merrill Auditorium, Portland. In classic Mahler design, the performance will bring together a large orchestral force involving the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra, the USM School of Music Women's Choir, the Southern Maine Children's Choir, and faculty artists from the University of Southern Maine, as well as alumna soloist Teresa Herold ('02), all directed by School of Music faculty member Robert Lehmann.

The Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra is made up of more than 70 musicians, ranging in age from 11 to 18. Established in 1942, the PYSO has grown into a pre-professional program of high caliber, which challenges its members with a diverse repertory of orchestral literature.
