ELLSWORTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Most people are familiar with the term Black Friday, but have you ever heard of Small Business Saturday? Several stores in the city of Ellsworth have and are using the day to their full advantage.

Small Business Saturday was founded by American Express in 2010 to help small businesses get more exposure during one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year. In Ellsworth several downtown businesses are using November 24th as a day to try to compete with big box retailers that generally fair better during days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. According to the Associate Director of the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce, Phyllis Young, Small Business Saturday has a little something for everyone and is a great way for locals to support their local economy. "There's toy stores, there's gift shops, there's cooking stores. It's a great blend in our downtown so I think you could fill up your whole list," says Young.

Stores through out downtown Ellsworth are running promotions for the event. The jewelry shop Pyramid Studios on State Street is giving away the latest iPads, Nanos, Shuffles and iTunes cards for any purchase over $75. "It's fun and for us as a business it sort of connects us with our neighbors," says the store's owner David Herrington.

According to American Express's website, last year Small Business Saturday brought out over 100 million people nationwide.
