PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Dozens of cats, dogs and rabbits are all safe and sound, following a fire at the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland on Wednesday.

The shelter is actually closed on Wednesdays, but volunteers say they're thankful to have been there walking the dogs at the time. Shortly after 8 o'clock, one of the dryers caught fire, billowing black smoke throughout the laundry and linen room. Community relations manager, Lynne McGhee, says with up to 150 animals at a time, the shelter does *several* loads of laundry every day.

McGhee says they had to get rid of all the bedding and linens due to the smoke damage. She says they desperately need donations of all dog, cat and rabbit bedding, cushions and sheets. The plush toys for dogs were all damaged too, so McGhee says that's a great treat to donate to the animals too.
