Ten years ago, we did a story on the Eagle 56. It was torpedoed by a German U-Boat five miles off Cape Elizabeth in the closing days of World War II. A naval historian named Paul Lawton of Brockton, Massachusetts heard of the story. He had heard that the Eagle sank in a boiler explosion. His research led the Navy to reverse the record which gives appropriate honor to the 54 crew members who died.
