Florham Park, NJ (Sports Network) - The New York Jets signed veteran kicker Billy Cundiff and released kicker Brett Maher on Tuesday.
Cundiff, who has played in nine NFL seasons with five teams, is expected to compete with Nick Folk for the starting job.
Cundiff played in the first five games with the Washington Redskins last year, hitting 7-of-12 field goal attempts before being cut.
He is most famous for missing a potential game-tying, 32-yard field goal with 15 seconds left in Baltimore's 23-20 loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game two years ago.
In 106 games with Dallas, New Orleans, Cleveland, Baltimore and Washington, Cundiff has hit 139-of-184 field goal attempts and 217-of-218 extra-point attempts.
In other team news, the Jets signed free agent long snapper Pat Scales and tackle Jeffrey Shugarts and released wide receiver Thomas Mayo and tackle Mark Popek Tuesday.
