PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Portland's first charter school, Baxter Academy, held its first day of classes Monday.
The school, which has about 130 students enrolled, held a ribbon cutting ceremony inside its newly renovated facility on York Street.
Baxter Academy is a STEM school, focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
The first day of instruction marks the end of a struggle to start school.
In March, the academy's board fired the Founder and Executive Director. This summer, the building failed inspection twice.
Students spent the first scheduled day of school on a field trip to Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, then spent the second day of school assembling classroom furniture and documenting the process for presentations.
