OLD TOWN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Two people died Wednesday night following a police standoff at an apartment on Main Street in the city.

Investigators have identified the two people killed as 28-year-old Christopher Ouellette and 35-year-old April Haskell. Ouellette and Haskell lived together in the apartment for about two months.

Responders say they were called called out to the apartment at 254 Main Street in Old Town around 6 p.m.after getting reports from a man that he had stabbed his girlfriend. When they got there they say Ouellette was holding two children inside the apartment and refused to let police enter the residence.

The incident ended when state trooper Barry Meserve shot Ouellette. Police were then able to enter the apartment where they found both people deceased.

As in all cases involving a police officer using deadly force, Trooper Meserve has now been placed on administrative leave while theAttorney General's Office investigates.

Police say they are trying to determine why Ouellette stabbed Haskell. The two children have been placed in the custody of relatives.

Ouellette's autopsy is scheduled for Thursday. An autopsy on Haskell is planned for Friday.
