(NEWS CENTER) -- On October 19, 1963, President John F. Kennedy addressed a Homecoming crowd at the University of Maine. Historian Michael Beschloss goes In The Arena with Pat Callaghan to talk about that speech 50 years ago and the Kennedy legacy.
Kennedy's efforts to thaw the Cold War with the Soviet Union was a major part of that Orono speech. Beschloss talks about whether that theme would have been a hard sell during Kennedy's 1964 re-election campaign. He also discusses JFK's efforts to pass a civil rights bill, and the dilemma posed by Vietnam. Beschloss also talks about Jackie Kennedy's new willingness to campaign with her husband and what had changed her attitude toward such trips.
