ALBION, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Students in Albion are showing their support for a classmate who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last year.

The Albion Elementary School took a 30 minute walk around its building, and raised $710 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Last year, 6th grader Rece Smith ended up in the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital for 3 days after his diagnosis. Now he's living with the disease, that is caused by the body's inability to create insulin, by monitoring his carbohydrates and his blood sugar, and by taking insulin shots.

Smith said, "It feels great that I can make a change in my life. It's amazing. There are no other words that can do justice for it."
