PHOENIX, Arizona (KPNX) --Authorities said Sunday that a man who was fatally shot by a Phoenix detective during a bank robbery had been the subject of a massive manhunt after killing one Mississippi police officer and wounding another following a bank robbery last week.

The crime spree Mario Edward Garnett, 40, is suspected of committing began the morning of December 23 in Atlanta, where police said he attempted to rob a bank, failed, and instead robbed a customer at an ATM outside the building.

It continued that afternoon when he robbed a BancorpSouth in Tupelo, Mississippi and ambushed two Tupelo officers, killing one and wounding another.

It ended just after 10 a.m. Saturday in Phoenix outside the Compass Bank when a police detective fatally shot Garnett as he was firing at a Phoenix police officer.

"He committed his crimes in the south and is suddenly thousands of miles west of there in our city," Phoenix Officer James Holmes said during a Sunday press conference.
