If the trend continues it won't be long before the state's businesses begin struggling to find qualified workers. One thing employers can do now to offset that is to turn to Maine's untapped workforce, people with disabilities.
Business groups are now focusing on Youth with disabilities who are seen as part of Maine's workforce solution. The Maine State Chamber of Commerce has been studying Maine's aging workforce and the future is not looking very bright. It sees people with disabilities as a key to filling future jobs. It's now working with other business groups to help get youth with disabilities interested in learning about opportunities at Maine companies and those companies interested in showing those young people the ropes through mentoring and job shadowing.
