LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - It's tax season and an organization called the Cash Coalition is helping people make the most of their tax returns.

Over the past decade, volunteers with the Cash Coalition have helped tax-payers get more than $15 million in returns. City leaders in Lewiston say that money goes right back into the community.

In 2011, more than $2 million was funneled back into Lewiston-Auburn.

Many people who visit the tax preparers may not realize the credits they are eligible for. One frequently missed credit: The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). That's designed for people who work but don't earn a lot of money.

"We went step-by-step through deductions and credits," says Jacklyn Case, a working, single mother who used the service, "At the end, when she told me my refund, I had tears of joy."

More than 20% of people who are eligible for the EITC don't realize they are and don't apply for it.

There will be free tax preparation sessions in Lewiston and across the state as we approach April 15th.
