DAMARISCOTTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A small Maine hospital has been named number one in the country for patient safety. The rating comes from Consumer Reports, which studied the Medicare records of hospitals all over the country.

The honor goes to Miles Hospital in Damariscotta. It's a 25-bed, acute care hospital, which, along with St. Andrews in Boothbay Harbor form Lincoln Health. And both are also part of the Maine Health organization.

Consumer Reports studied a variety of factors to determine how well the hospital protects patients from infection, treats them so they don't need to be readmitted and informs patients on their care and proper treatment once they leave the hospital. Miles officials say the number one safety ranking is a tribute to their staff, and a result of many years of paying careful attention to the same needs.

Hospital CEO Jim Donovan says Miles has received a number of awards and high ratings in recent years, but that a high rating from Consumer Reports has a special meaning, because so many people read and trust what they say.
