AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine's nursing homes could see a funding boost under legislation awaiting Gov. Paul LePage's signature.

The Democratic-led Legislature recently approved a $4 million measure that would increase Medicaid reimbursements to nursing homes in the fiscal year that starts in July. Nursing homes currently are reimbursed based on what their expenditures were in 2005, which officials say has left them severely underfunded and has forced some to shut their doors. Meanwhile, a bill that fixes a $32 million hole in the state budget includes $5 million for nursing homes in the fiscal year that ends June 30, 2016, and $5 million the following year. Nursing home administrators say the increased payments would be helpful but may come too late for many facilities already teetering on the verge of closure.
