MILLINOCKET, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Great Northern Paper said issued a WARN Act notice to employees Friday, a formal notice that they are out of a job.
A WARN Act requires employers provide 60 days notice to workers in advance of plant closings and mass layoffs. This is required if the employers have a certain percentage of employees laid off for more than a six month period. The GNP layoff on February 6, 2014 was classified as temporary, but the WARN Act signifies a permanent closing of the plant.
Though this is federally mandated, officials at GNP said they "remain committed to committed to working towards a restart of the East Millinocket facility."
GNP said it has a reduced staff to properly maintain and preserve the facility. GNP owes the town of East Millinocket about $700,000 in back taxes.
