GORHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Multiple emergency agencies will conduct an active shooter training exercise Tuesday at Great Falls Elementary School in Gorham.

Gorham Police said the it will be a full scale training exercise that includes police, fire and medical services. Gorham Police opened the training to surrounding agencies, hoping to get as many as involved as possible.

The Department of Homeland Security said multiple causality shootings are anomalies for most emergency responders, educators, mental health practitioners, and others. Though unusual, emergency officials must be prepared for the incidents and an active shooter. The Department of Homeland Security said this includes dealing with victims and those traumatized.

Since 2006, there have been more than 200 mass killings in the United States, reports USA TODAY. Though they only account for about one percent of murders nationally, USA TODAY reports that a mass killing - where four or more people are killed - occurs about every two weeks. The most recent example of this in Maine would be the murder-suicide in Saco, Maine at the end of July.

The training begins at 8:00 a.m.
