PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Portland Conservatory is offering a new music program for kids called Youth Music Club. The program puts instruments in the hands of kids who, for whatever reason, might not otherwise have had the chance to play.
The program offers guitar, African drum, and choir lessons for kids ages 8 to 18. Prices for the lessons vary depending upon family income, but can cost as low as $1 per lesson.
Don Pride has been teaching guitar for 37 years, and is now bringing his experience to the club. His classes have been attracting around three to four kids a week, but as long as everyone is having fun with the music then that's all that matters to him.
"I just like the interaction with the kids and I've been teaching for many years and this is one of my favorite things to do, is kind of pass this on to them," said Pride.
The classes are offered at Mayo Street Arts in Portland. African drum lessons are Wednesdays from 3-3:45pm for ages 8-12 and from 4-5pm for ages 13-18. Guitar lessons are Thursday from 3:15-4pm for ages 8-12 and from 4-5pm for ages 13-18. Choir lessons are Wednesdays from 5-6pm for ages 13-18 and on Thursdays from 5-5:45pm for ages 8-12.
