BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The first United Chicago flight took off from Bangor International Airport Thursday and was the first BIA United flight since the early 1990's. There will be one flight in and out of Bangor International Airport until Augusta, when the number will increase to two.
The addition of the United Chicago flight route is an important economic boost for the airport, which had to lay off some personnel last year due to the decrease in military flights. With the increased revenue from United, airport was able to bring back five of those employees, as well as hire more.
"The good news is, obviously, our troops were coming home, getting out of the war, certainly a positive thing, but unfortunately it did affect our business. Having an additional service like United in Bangor did give us the opportunity to bring some people back on a part-time basis," said Airport Director Anthony Caruso.
Caruso said he hopes that in the future, Bangor International Airport and United do more business together, and that more flight destinations are added.
