BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A former selectwoman in Chelsea, Maine, convicted of extortion and fraud, was sentenced to seven years in federal prison Friday.

In total, Carole Swan will serve 87 months in federal prison, stemming from 10 charges. She was convicted in September of 2013 of extortion after using her position to seek kickbacks from a contractor who plowed the town's roads. Swan was also convicted last July of worker's compensation fraud and income tax fraud.

She spent 19 years as a selectwoman in Chelsea. Swan will begin serving her sentence 60 days from Friday in a Texas federal prison.
