BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Former Police Chief Donald Winslow has passed away, confirmed the Bangor Police Department.

Winslow served as the 27th Police Chief for the Bangor Police Department from 1998 to 2007. He began his public safety career as a firefighter in Old Town in 1976. He joined the Bangor Police Department in 1979 where he served in almost every position in the department, including as an undercover drug agent and deputy chief.

"Don was a highly regarded community relations officer and one of the police department's first DARE officers," said Bangor Police Chief Mark Hathaway.

Winslow passed away quietly at his home Thursday morning with his family. He had been battling cancer and Hathaway said he approached life, managing the police department and cancer with courage, compassion and a sense of humor.

"He will always be our chief," said Hathaway.

Service arrangements and information regarding a memorial will be announced at a later date.
