BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A man is in police custody after physically assaulting a pregnant woman on Essex Street in Bangor Monday morning.
Bangor Police responded to a reported family fight in an apartment building 2:15 a.m. Police said they found a pregnant woman lying on the floor in the hallway, conscious but severely injured. The victim was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center.
Her alleged attacker, 34-year-old Joshua Cole, held himself up inside his apartment and refused to come out to speak to police. After speaking with crisis negotiators, Cole opened the door at 3:47 a.m. and then officers arrested him.
Other people in the apartment building attempted to stop the assault as it was happening.
"Besides the pregnant woman that was severely injured, another woman was hurt badly and a male individual who also tried to intervene was injured," said Sergeant Tim Cotton of the Bangor Police Department.
Cole was briefly treated at EMMC and now remains in police custody. He faces charges of elevated aggravated assault on the pregnant woman, as well as one count of aggravated assault and one count of assault on the two individuals who attempted to stop the attack.
The victim is currently being treated at an out-of-state hospital. Her condition has not been released.
